Present Indefinite Tense

The Present Indefinite, also called the Simple Present, is used for habits, routines, repeated actions, permanent situations, general truths and facts.

Basic Structure

Sentence Type Structure Example
Affirmative Subject + base verb / verb with s or es She goes to school.
Negative Subject + do/does not + base verb She does not go to school.
Interrogative Do/Does + subject + base verb? Does she go to school?

When to Use It

  • Habit: I read the newspaper every morning.
  • Routine: He reaches school at eight.
  • General truth: The earth revolves around the sun.
  • Permanent situation: They live in Lahore.
  • Feeling or state: She loves her cat.

Use of S and ES

With he, she, it or a singular noun, add s or es to the verb in an affirmative sentence:

  • He works hard.
  • She goes to college.
  • Ali watches television.
  • The baby cries.

After does or does not, always use the base form:

  • Correct: She does not like tea.
  • Incorrect: She does not likes tea.

Common Signal Words

Always, usually, often, sometimes, seldom, never, every day, every week, regularly and generally commonly indicate the Present Indefinite.

Present Continuous Tense

The Present Continuous is used for an action happening now, around the present time or during a temporary period.

Basic Structure

Sentence Type Structure Example
Affirmative Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing She is reading a book.
Negative Subject + am/is/are not + verb-ing She is not reading a book.

  • Changing situation: The weather is becoming warmer.

Common Signal Words

Now, right now, at present, at the moment, today, currently, look and listen often indicate the Present Continuous.

Stative Verbs

  • know
  • understand

  • need
  • belong
  • remember

For example, “She loves her cat” is natural, while “She is loving her cat” is normally incorrect when love describes a feeling.
