Social Security Disability Insurance does not pay everybody on the same day. Your payment date is decided by the day of the month you were born on, not by when you were approved, not by your state, and not by your bank. For 2027 the schedule follows the same rule as every recent year: second Wednesday for birthdays 1–10, third Wednesday for 11–20, fourth Wednesday for 21–31.
Below is the complete 2027 calendar with all forty-eight payment dates worked out, the exceptions that move your money to the 3rd of the month, and how your first payment is calculated if your benefits start part-way through a year. The COLA that applies from January 2027 is 3.6%, so every payment in this calendar carries the new amount.

The Exception — Payments on the 3rd of the Month
Not everyone with a disability benefit follows the Wednesday calendar. You are paid on the 3rd of each month if any of these apply:
- You started receiving benefits before May 1997.
- You receive both SSDI and SSI (concurrent benefits). In that case SSI comes on the 1st and SSDI on the 3rd.
- You live outside the United States, in most cases.
- Your benefit is paid to a representative payee in certain circumstances.
If your date has never matched the Wednesday rule, check whether one of these applies before assuming the schedule is wrong.
How Your First Payment Is Calculated
New beneficiaries are the ones most often surprised. SSDI is paid one month in arrears, and there is a five-month waiting period from the date the SSA establishes your disability began.
- Month 1 to 5 — waiting period: no cash benefit is payable, though Medicare eligibility can begin earlier than the cash benefit in some cases.
- Month 6 onward — benefits accrue, but are paid in the following month.
- Example: if disability onset is established as 1 January 2027, the waiting period runs January to May, entitlement begins June, and the first cheque for June is paid in July 2027 on your Wednesday.
The SSA pays retroactive benefits only within the limits set by law — generally up to twelve months before the application date. A late application therefore costs money that cannot be recovered.
SSDI vs SSI Dates — The Difference Matters
| Feature | SSDI | SSI |
|---|---|---|
| Payment day | Wednesday, based on birth date (or the 3rd) | 1st of the month, moved earlier for weekends and holidays |
| Based on work history | Yes — needs sufficient work credits | No — needs limited income and resources |
| Early payment months in 2027 | None | May, August (paid in the previous month) |
| 2027 COLA | 3.6% | 3.6% |

What the 3.6% COLA Does to Your Payment
The January 2027 payment is the first one at the new rate. If your 2026 benefit was $1,500 a month, multiply by 1.036 to get roughly $1,554. The average disabled worker’s benefit rises from about $1,642 to about $1,701 a month.
If you also have Medicare Part B, the premium is deducted before the money reaches you. The projected 2027 standard Part B premium is $209.50, so a smaller gross increase can look like a much smaller net increase. Our Medicare Part B premium 2027 guide explains the deduction in detail.
When the Money Is Late
A missing payment is usually one of five things:
- Banking details changed — a new account number, a closed account, or a name mismatch. Check your direct deposit information in my Social Security first.
- Address change not reported — the SSA may suspend payments when a mailing address fails.
- Continuing disability review (CDR) — payments can pause during a review that has not been returned.
- Earnings reported above the limit — the SSA may be recalculating.
- Federal benefit offset — an overdue federal debt such as a student loan can be taken from the payment.
Wait three business days past your date before calling, because most delays clear themselves. If it does not, call 1-800-772-1213 or contact your local field office with your claim number.
Frequently Asked Questions
What day do SSDI payments arrive in 2027?
The second, third or fourth Wednesday of each month depending on your birth date: 1st–10th gets the second Wednesday, 11th–20th the third, 21st–31st the fourth. The full calendar is in the table above.
Why am I paid on the 3rd instead of a Wednesday?
Because you are in one of the exception groups — benefits started before May 1997, concurrent SSDI and SSI, or residency outside the United States.
Is there an extra SSDI payment in 2027?
No. Twelve payments in the year. Because the Wednesday rule never falls on a weekend, no 2027 SSDI payment is shifted into a neighbouring month.
Is my SSDI payment reduced if I work?
Yes, above the monthly substantial gainful activity threshold — $1,770 for non-blind beneficiaries in 2027. The trial work period threshold is $1,270 a month.
Does Medicare come out of my SSDI?
Usually yes, once Medicare starts. The Part B premium is deducted from the monthly benefit unless you arrange otherwise.
Bottom Line
Save one line from this article: your birth date decides your payment week. Born 1st to 10th, you are paid on the second Wednesday. Born 11th to 20th, the third Wednesday. Born 21st to 31st, the fourth Wednesday. In 2027 that means 13, 20 and 27 January, and the same pattern through to 8, 15 and 22 December. No weekend shifts, no early payments, and a 3.6% increase in every cheque from January.
